Why do game lag?

Why games lag? how to fix it?

If you are talking about single player games, you will have to understand how the game works.

Assume that the game does not work in real time. To imitate physics, a game has to make everything happen simultaneously, so the times are divided into many parts, where each stage of the game must count EVERYTHING that happens in that phase. To deceive your eyes / mind, all parts occur very quickly, usually a few ms.

The thing is, if there is too much to do, the time required to do all the calculations can take longer than it should have (it could happen in strategy games where the map is too big, in FPS / action games when the game is poorly designed or when your machine is below expectations). The stages therefore take longer than they should and the game loses the sense of continuity.

Now, when you talk about multiplayer games, imagine that every player lives in a different place and that every player's actions need to travel thousands of miles to reach you, and inform your game of everyone's actions.

You may have heard that information goes at the speed of light. Yes, it is BS. The information travels in part to the speed of light in the vacuum (30% if I remember correctly). Well, that's really fast, but unfortunately, the information doesn't go straight from your computer to the host. It has to go through quite a few gates, where it has to be converted from light to an electric signal, line up, processed, and illuminated just to get to another door. And behind those gates, it has to go to the host, processed and relocated.

This process makes taking a few tens of ms. If it happens in less than 100ms, then you have a decent connection where you won’t see it missing. If it is more than 100ms of it, you will be very upset. Over 250ms, the game is unplayable.
